COMMUNITY COMPOST PROGRAM

Join Our Community Compost Program: Make a Difference in DeKalb County!

We’re excited to introduce our Community Compost Program, designed to help DeKalb County residents and businesses reduce waste, protect the environment, and build a more sustainable future—together. Organic waste, such as food scraps and yard trimmings, makes up over 12% of landfill waste in Georgia. This waste not only takes up valuable landfill space but also generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas with 25 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide.

Our Community Compost Program provides an easy, eco-friendly way to divert organic materials from landfills. By joining, you can help reduce the nearly 1.6 billion pounds of food waste generated in Georgia every year and transform that waste into nutrient-rich compost that benefits local gardens, farms, and green spaces.

How It Works:

1. Sign Up: Join the program and receive a free composting bin for your food scraps and organic waste.

2. Collection: Each week, we’ll pick up your bin and take it to a local composting facility, where it will be turned into high-quality compost.

3. Give Back: The compost we create is used to enrich community gardens, parks, and local farms, nourishing our soil and reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.

Why Join?

• Reduce Waste: Food and organic waste make up over 50% of municipal solid waste. Let’s change that!

• Cut Methane Emissions: Help curb harmful methane production from landfills by composting your food scraps.

• Support Local Agriculture: The compost we produce supports sustainable agriculture and community gardening efforts.

• Build Community: Our program fosters collaboration between residents, local businesses, and environmental organizations to create a greener future for DeKalb County.

What Can You Compost?

• Fruit and vegetable scraps

• Coffee grounds and filters

• Eggshells

• Yard clippings (leaves, grass)

• Paper towels and napkins

• Bread, grains, and more!

By participating in the Community Compost Program, you are helping to create a cleaner, healthier environment while supporting local initiatives that give back to the community. Let’s work together to reduce waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and build a sustainable future for DeKalb County—one compost bin at a time!
